Mos Def to Unleash Mousers On ‘Ninja Turtles’

to Comics, Movies

Mos Def is the perfect choice to play Baxter Stockman in new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

Michael Bay‘s forthcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could use a heavy dose of star power.  In order to make fans forget the Michael Bay and Megan Fox connections, I would recommend the film incorporate the character of scientist Baxter Stockman and enlist Mos Def to play him.

Here’s What You Need To Know

Stockman is best known as the creator of the Mousers, small sharp-beaked robots that hunt the Turtles’ mentor Splinter.  Already cast are Fox as April O’Neil, William Fichtner and Will Arnett.  Baxter Stockman has appeared in a variety of forms throughout different iterations of the Turtles’ adventures. In the original comic, he was an African-American scientist and April O’Neil’s boss who later became a cyborg.  In the animated series that ran in the late 80’s and 90’s, Stockman was a white inventor who was morphed into a human fly after spending time as Shredder’s henchman.  In the 2003 series he was again an African-American scientist but became the Turtles’ version of Alex Krychek, repeatedly tortured for his failures by the Shredder.

Why Is This A Good Idea?

The new film has already been the recipient of a high amount of skepticism from fans, both for the participation of Megan Fox and Michael Bay and for the rumored major changes to the concept of the film.  Including a comic-accurate version of a major Ninja Turtles character could ally fan fears and bring skeptics to see the movie.

As for casting Mos Def, the guy turned in wonderful performances in Hitchhiker’s Guide and 16 Blocks, showing himself to be likable and showing that he has the acting chops to hold his own on screen with great comic actors and action stars alike.

A great villainous henchman can elevate any villain.  If the film included a suitably bad Stockman, that could help elevate the obviously risky take on The Shredder that the film plans to take (the production has cast William Fichtner in the part).

But Will This Actually Happen?

This seems unlikely to happen . The film has been in production for awhile and no announcements have been made about either the inclusion of Stockman or the casting of Mos Def.  But you never know, perhaps he could appear in a cameo, setting up an appearance in a later film?
