Adam Warren Gets ‘Dirty’

Adam Warren makes the ideal creative director for an anime reboot of The Dirty Pair

Comic artist Adam Warren is probably best known for his manga-esque art style and work on Marvel’s Livewires and Dark Horse’s Empowered.  But it would be great if he would return to work on The Dirty Pair, the characters he worked with for several years at Dark Horse Comics.

Here’s What You Need To Know

The Dirty Pair began as a series of light comedy novels by Haruka Takachiho and Yoshikazu Yasuhiko before later appearing in multiple manga and anime adventures. The story revolves around Kei and Yuri, a pair of ‘trouble consultants’ code named “The Lovely Angels” but more commonly known as “The Dirty Pair” for the massive destruction they usually leave in their wake. After their novel adventures, the characters appeared in a TV series on Nippon Television, as well as several OVA’s and a film. In America, the character’s adventures were released by the now-defunct Eclipse Comics before making their home at Dark Horse Comics where Warren saw them through several mini-series. Biohazards was the first American release (by Eclipse) before the release of A Plague of Angels by Studio Proteus and being taken over by Dark Horse with Sim Hell.

Why Is This A Good Idea?

Warren could work with Sunrise Inc. on a brand-new animated series based on his version of the Pair, with an animated style that closely matches his trademark style. The animated style mirroring the printed style has a precedent these days with DC Comics having released animated adventures that match the art style of it’s source material.  They have managed to convincingly mimic the styles of such diverse talent as Frank Miller, Frank Quitely and Darwyn Cook.  The story should begin with an arc detailing the origins of the team before moving on to arcs loosely based on the Deadly But Not Serious and Run From The Future mini-series. And if the series took off it’s just a short leap for Warren to work on animated version of his current Dark Horse series Empowered.

But Will This Actually Happen?

I wouldn’t count on it.  There is so much anime out there these days that properties like Dirty Pair are lost in the shuffle.  But it sure would be awesome.
